I can’t even begin to describe how happy I am to be living in a „real“ city again. I never really noticed how much I missed having several cafés to explore until I finally started doing it again. So here’s the list of my findings in Ljubljana so far. I will update it whenever I discover something new.
Kavarna Moderna, Cankarjeva cesta 15
I only discovered this hidden treasure thanks to one of my colleagues and it immediately became my favorite place in Ljubljana. It’s located in the Museum of Modern Art, feels wide and open, but yet cozy. You can sit on the stylish stairs, on one of the comfortable sofa spots or at a „normal“ table if you want to work, which this place is btw perfect for. The staff is extremely nice and they offer a wide selection of tea and coffee (including cold brew and chemex). They also have cake, daily soups and rice, oat and soy milk.
Tue-Thu 10-20, Fri 10-24, Sat+Sun 10-20
Flo Bistro, Gornji trg 25
As described on their Instagram profile, this is a „peaceful corner with artistic soul, located beneath the castle.“ Definitely worth a visit before, after or instead walking up to Ljubljanski grad. The homemade hot ginger lemonade is really nice and they also have oat and rice milk.
Mon-Fri 7-1, Sat+Sun 8-1
Tozd, Gallusovo nabrežje 27
Small and cozy café by the river. They have rice and soy milk and really good matcha chai and also offer some food, like sandwiches and daily soups.
Mon-Sun 8:30-1
Pritličje, Mestni trg 2
Located right next to the city hall in the center of Ljubljana, this place is usually quite busy. It has a nice, young, artistic vibe to it though and also organize different events. Check their Facebook page (linked above) for details. Both coffee and Jasmine tea are pretty good and they have rice milk, daily vegan soup and sandwich.
Sun-Wed 9-1, Thu-Sat 9-1
Kavarna Tiskarna, Dunajska cesta 123
It’s actually more of a restaurant/pub (they have really good burgers – also vegan – and a nice beer selection). But during the day, the cozy terrace invites to outdoor work/study sessions. They don’t have any plant milk, but the Jasmine tea is really good.
Sun-Wed 9-22, Thu-Sat 9-23
Ek Bistro, Petkovškovo nabrežje 65
Hip and small brunch and breakfast place (book a table if you want to go on weekends!). Great service, but no vegan food options. They do however have rice milk. Unfortunately, their matcha latte is automatically with sugar.
Mon-Sun 8-16
Centralna Postaja, Trubarjeva cesta 23
Located in my favorite street in Ljubljana, this place is many things at once: restaurant, café, bar, radio station… The interior is really nice and stylish and I hear the food is pretty decent, too.
Mon-Thu 8-1, Fri-Sat 8-3
Bazilika Café, Miklošičeva cesta 22
Quite small, but cozy place close to the train station. Apart from coffee and tea, they have fresh juices, smoothies and snacks (soups, salads, sandwiches, etc. – also vegan and glutenfree options). Soy and rice milk available.
Mon-Fri 7-18
Barbarella Juice Bar, Slovenska Cesta 38
It’s quite small and usually busy, so not necessarily the place to hang out at for hours. However, it’s the place for a fresh, coldpressed juice, a smoothie or other healthy treats, like soups, salads and lunch bowls. Vegan and glutenfree options available.
Mon-Fri 7-20
Kavarna Sem, Metelkova ulica 2
Located in the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, this place has a nice intercultural vibe. There’s usually plenty of space, but it can get quite loud if it’s busy. There’s also a Salsa night every Friday, Swing on Mondays and other cultural events. Check their Facebook page to keep updated.
Mon-Sun 7-1
